Only from Kahului, on Maui — and only if your port call runs roughly eleven hours or longer. Hilo, Kona and Nawiliwili are different islands entirely; the Road to Hana is not reachable from any of them.
Done properly the road takes about nine hours. So the question is not really “can I” — it is whether your ship gives you enough hours, and for some ships the honest answer is no.
The Hana Highway is about 52 miles of coast road with 59 bridges, most of them one lane, and roughly 600 curves. The driving alone is two to two and a half hours each way with no stops, and nobody sensible drives it without stopping — the stops are the road.
Our full day runs eight to ten hours door to door. Against that, here is what each port call actually gives you.
| Ship | Port window | Hours | Full road? |

| Ruby Princess | 7:00 AM → 6:00 PM | 11 hrs | Yes |
| Carnival Radiance | 10:00 AM → 9:30 PM | 11.5 hrs | Yes, finishing in the dark |
| Emerald Princess | ~7–8 AM → 6–7 PM | ~11 hrs | Yes, check your ticket |
| Crown Princess | 8:00 AM → 7:00 PM | 11 hrs | Yes |
| Sapphire Princess | 8:00 AM → 7:00 PM | 11 hrs | Yes |
| ms Zaandam | 8:00 AM → 5:00 PM | 9 hrs | No — half day instead |

It looks like it should fit. It does not. A day with no margin is a day spent watching a clock instead of a coastline, and one incident on a one-lane bridge turns you into the people running down the pier.
When a ship's window is nine hours or less we will tell you so and offer the half day instead — the waterfalls, the bamboo and the best of the coast, back at the pier by mid-afternoon. We would rather run you a shorter day than a tense one.
Not the driving. Park reservations. Waiʻānapanapa State Park requires advance entry and parking reservations from non-residents, released only 30 days ahead — after most cruise passengers have stopped planning. Here is how that works.
It is the safe choice and there is no shame in it — the ship waits for its own tours. But it is a coach on a fixed route with fixed stop times, and for four adults it usually costs more than a private vehicle. Norwegian's own Scenic Road to Hāna with Lunch is $329.99 a head; four of them is $1,319.96. Our whole vehicle is $1,300.
The real reason people choose the ship's tour is fear of being left behind. That fear deserves a straight answer too.
A real person on Maui answers, usually within a couple of hours, and will tell you straight whether the day works — including when it doesn’t.
